Cavalleria Rusticana
Cavalleria Rusticana Mascagni’s tale of passion, betrayal and revenge unfolds in a Sicilian village where a local boy betrothed to Lola returns home from military to find his fiancee Lola married to Alfio, a carter. As an act of revenge Turiddu seduces Santuzza,and Lola jealous of Santuzza begins an adulterous affair with Turiddu, sealing his unhappy and tragic fate. Mercury Opera’s debut production tranports the action to contemporary NYC’s Little Italy, south of Greenwich Village. The site specific multi media production staged inside Studio Ze a 4,000 square foot loft space on Soho’s lower Broadway, a stone’s thow away from Mulberry Street boasted a 21 piece orchestra. The audience was immersed in the action. The orginal cast included Stephen Gaertner (Metropolitan Opera) as Alfio, Frank Porretta (Metropolitan Opera) as Turiddu and Denetra Adams as Lola, conducted by Kosta Popovic (Metropolitan Opera). A 3 performance run was sold – out – standing room only and was featured on ABC News’ Lifetime live.
